History
|
 |
Taken from the emblem of Lucca as the majority of the ancient inhabitants of this Contrada were merchants from Lucca. Since Lucca was on bad terms with Pisa and Genoa, they opened a trading centre on the territory of this Contrada because Lucca's free port was Talamone.
The panther has also been used as a symbol of the regal power of Islamic Potentates since the IXth century".
Its Seat is in via San Quirico, its Patron Saint is San Giovanni Decollato.
The bronze baptismal font is the work of the sculptor Giulio Corsini (1977).
The Church is one of the oldest, probably the oldest, in Siena and is named after Saint Quirico and Saint Giulietta. It is built on the site of an ancient pagan temple dedicated to the God Quirinus. The Contrada has only recently moved to this Church where it used to hold its meetings in 1814, prior to this it met in the Church of the suppressed Convent of Santa Margherita in Castelvecchio.
The bell of this Church was the same one which appeared on the Sienese "carroccio" at the battle of Montaperti. The temporary Church of the Contrada is Santa Maria del Carmine as the roof of its own Church is unsafe and is waiting to undergo repair.
There is a magnificent wooden statue of the Madonna della Mandorla (Madonna of the Almond) by the school of Jacopo della Quercia. The studio of the famous painter Duccio di Buoninsegna (1260-1319) was on this territory. The literary figure and historian Girolamo Gigli (1660-1722) and the physicist Pirro Maria Gabrielli (1643-1706) lived here.
The antagonism between the Pantera and the Aquila is quite recent (1946). Peace had been made in 1788 after a very critical period in which the Pantera, in 1718, had opposed more than any other Contrada, the readmission of the Aquila in the list of Contrade taking part in the Palio. For more than two centuries, it was the "traditional" enemy of the Selva with whom very serious incidents were recorded in 1867.
The "Società" is called "Due Porte" after a characteristic piece of architecture on this territory.
