History
|
 |
The name of this Contrada is derived from "Montorio", the legendary Roman centurion who with Camelio laid siege to the nephews of Romulus, Senio and Aschio, the founders of Siena. The contrast between the three castles before they became one emerged from this tradition.
Other sources attribute the origin of the name to the valley below the "Castellare" of Montone Piccolomini which was sited where the Basilica of Santa Maria dei servi now stands.
The jockey wears a pink jacket and trousers with white and yellow stripes during the Palio race to distinguish himself from the jockey of the Chiocciola.
Its Seat is in the piazzetta di Valdimontone. Its Patron Saint if Maria SS. del Buon Consiglio. Its Church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and stands on one side of the Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi. It is of particular interest due to its architecture and its interior which is covered with frescos of the XVIth and XVIIth centuries (Nasini, Salimbeni and Casolani). There is a Madonna with Child and Saints by Neroccio and another by Sano di Pietro in the sacristy.
The famous naturalist and botanist Pier Andrea Mattioli (1501-1577) on the territory of this Contrada and the ancient Piccolomini, Banchi Bandinelli, Rigoleschi, Petroni and Altoviti families also lived in this Contrada.
