It has its Seat in via del Comune and venerates the Madonna as its Patron Saint, under the title of "Visitazione di Maria SS." (visitation of Mary). In the Church there is a Madonna with Child believed to be by Berna (XIVth century).
A famous event took place on 14th July 1371 when the people of this Contrada, (led by Francesco d'Agnolo di Lando) insighted an uprising which overthrew the Government of the Twelve and established "Monte del Popolo" to lead the city. For this reason and for the courage shown by its soldiers in the battle of the Croce del Travaglio (January 1369) in which the Emperor Charles IV of Bohemia was defeated, it was awarded the title "Nobile" or Noble Contrada.
On the baptismal font, restored by Lorenzo Borgogni from the antique fountain of San Bernardino, is a sculpture representing Barbicone by Angelo Canevari.
The "Società" is next to the Seat of the Contrada and at the back there is a large and
thriving garden in a suggestive position next to the city walls.
Due to ancient custom the official representative of the Contrada is called the "Rettore" (Chancellor) instead of "Priore" (President).
