History
|
|
The Contrada has its seat in San Giovannino in Pantaneto where its people used to meet centuries ago. Over the centuries the Contrada was forced to move to other Oratories (Cappella dell'Angelo, San Pietro in Banchi, San Giorgio). Its Patron Saint is Saint John the Baptist.
In ancient times it was sometimes called "Leopardo" (leopard) or "Stella" (star).
The unicorn represents magical oriental values mainly because it took the place of a star which symbolized the planet Mercury.
The meaning of virginity attributed to this planet is confirmed by the colours of the flag.
It patronizes the "brotherhood of artists".
Among the traditional, historical and artistic items in its museums there is a bell which a folk-tale says must have belonged to the Florentine "carroccio" conquered at Montaperti in 1260.
The fortress-houses of the Pagliaresi, Cauli e Guastalloni families were built on Contrada territory. The illustrious jurists Bartolomeo and Mariano di Sozzino and of the same families Lelio and Fausto, the Apostles of the Reform, all lived in Palazzo Malavolti, via di Pantaneto.
